The self-titled debut album that started it all, introducing Matt Kirk’s signature Texicana sound to the world. Part Americana, part Texas blues, part Gulf Coast soul, Kirk’s Texicana sound wraps up all the ingredients of the Southern Texas musical landscape and rolls it into one. The debut album features a cast of heavy-hitter guests; leading off, the album opens with Kirk’s small-town anthem to his home of New Braunfels with ‘Sleepy Little Summertime Town’, which charted at #67 on the Texas Regional Radio Report in December 2023, a notable achievement for an independent band’s debut. The track also features the punchy Grooveline Horns (Marcus King, Warren Haynes, Kenny Wayne Shepard), who return later in the album on ‘Poor Man’s Blues’. Next up is Kevin Russell (Shinyribs, The Gourds),who lends vocals and washboard by way of Beaumont to ‘Hypothetically Speaking’. Taking a turn further south, conjunto accordionist Josh Baca, of the storied Baca conjunto lineage, adds some flavor to ‘OK’. Matt’s family also steps in for support, with mother Sylvia and niece Maddie adding additional vocals on ‘Weight of the World’ and ‘River’. Texas guitar virtuoso Monte Montgomery, a mentor of sorts to Matt, offers additional guitar on the album’s closing track, '‘Dreams Are Never Lost’, and last, but certainly not least, Gene Elders, George Strait’s longtime fiddle player from his famed Ace in the Hole band, contributed a string arrangement on ‘Take My Heart’, in what would be one of his last studio recordings.
Produced by Dwight Baker (Kelly Clarkson, Josh Abbott Band) and recorded in Austin, Texas in 2024, Matt’s standalone single ‘Nobody But You’ speaks to the idea of recognizing the time that comes in a man’s life when he stops, takes a look around, and realizes there’s better living living lockstep with the one you love and leaving rough-and-tumble single life days behind.
The track was included in the vinyl re-release of Matt’s debut album as a bonus track, with an official music video slated to release in June 2025.
Produced and recorded by wunderkind David Beck (David Beck’s Texan Weekend, Blue Healer), ‘Prayin’ For Rain’, also recorded and released as a standalone single in 2024, relates the struggles of Texas’ now years-long drought and the impact it has on the environment, life and culture in South Texas, drawing from Matt’s experience working as a ranchhand in Menard (population 1,300) in his youth, highlighting his songwriting and folk chops.
Like ‘Nobody But You’, this track was also included as a bonus track in the 2025 re-release of Matt’s debut album.
